You’re not really in the business you think you are.

Howard Behar of Starbucks says the company really isn't about the coffee

That’s what I gleaned from my book browsing last week at Borders, after I drank my Starbucks’ coffee. I’m not a big fan of Starbucks’ coffee because I think our local kopi packs more punch. But sometimes, a little indulgence is all right especially if I’m at Borders for a few hours and feel too thirsty to read. Plus it’s not just the coffee. It’s also the expansive view of the Penang Bridge, of Pulau Jerejak. Of comfy wingchairs you could sink in all day. Of the smell of coffee too. Continue reading »

One of the interesting ways to get myself thinking and pondering is always to suss and read other business blogs. Not only do I get a lot of ideas but I also get to understand how other people in other parts of the world think particularly when you read the comments section.

One post you should try reading is this Harvard Business Review blog post called “Are Your Prices High Enough?”

Yes, did you do a double-take? Are your prices high enough? Not low enough.

In business, most people think that the lower one’s prices, the better it is right? Unless you are Tesco or Carrefour and run on volume sales, it probably isn’t the best way to market your products and services. Continue reading »

Although I have been writing for many years now, I did not actively seek writing opportunities with magazines or newspapers because I run my own business and time is often lacking. But writing is a hobby and most times, my takes on life is published in my blog.

I enjoy travel and food so once in a while I will take some of my blog posts and turn them into full length articles. Sometimes I submit these articles for free reprints to article directories. (I did major in Journalism though so I believe writing keeps my journo muscles lean and mean.)

Imagine my surprise when I was one day contacted by the travel editor of an Australian newspaper who wanted to reproduce my article. I wrote a few articles in 2004 on travelling and dining in Sarawak and the editor had picked one of those to reprint. Continue reading »
